Okefenokee Swamp, in Georgia, consists of 400,000 acres of canals; moss draped cypress trees, and lily pad prairies offering sanctuaries for hundreds of species of birds and wildlife including some endangered species.

Cypress wood is lightweight and durable making it a popular with artists and carpenters. Cypress wood can be used for making chests, tables, cabinets, and shingles. It also makes great firewood as it is easy to split, dries quickly and burns clean.

The Arizona Cypress tree is exceptionally tolerant of hot, dry conditions. This makes it an excellent tree for its native habitat, the southwestern United States and Northern Mexico. In these locales it makes an excellent windbreak and is also widely used for soil erosion planting.

Wildlife Value:
The seeds of the Arizona Cypress are consumed by squirrels, ground squirrels, and other rodents.

The Arizona Cypress is a native of interior Mexico extending into the southwestern United States where it is the only native Cypress. For a major species it was discovered by Euro-Americans rather recently in history. Credit for the discovery goes to E. L. Greene, who made the find in the 1880s.

Bald cypress is the state tree of Louisiana. Unlike other conifers it is a deciduous tree which loses its needles in the winter. Their fall colors range from tan, cinnamon, to fiery orange.

Frogs, toads, and salamanders use bald cypress swamps as breeding grounds.

Bald cypress is in for heavy construction, including docks, warehouses, boats and bridges.

Cypress is called the "wood eternal" because the heartwood is resistant to decay.
